A complex and intriguing Sonata composed for the celebrated performer and improvisor Robert Levin. Harbison's piece seeks to integrate some of his favoured choral techniques in an instrumental setting, leading to a work that is structurally dense and ever-changing. He combines the explicit with the implicit, allowing the performer a great deal of freedom in nuance and phrasing - especially ideal for those accustomed to the situation of improvisation and risk-friendly, cliff-hanging performance.
The work was completed in 2001 for commission by the publisher, and was first performed by Levin in Boston 2003.
