In 1884, Josef Rheinberger composed a setting for solo voice and piano of the Christmas poem "Morgenstern der finstern Nacht" by the mystic Baroque poet Angelus Silesius at the behest of a magazine. 16 years later, he returned to the melody and set it for four-part a cappella choir. Both versions are printed in the choral song sheet. The choral setting - published here for the first time - is a welcome addition to the Christmas repertoire.
