The purpose of this text is to provide the intermediate student timpanist with a collection of musical studies based on the ever-increasing literature for Timpani.
This study was written for use on both the high school and college levels. It is divided into three sections: pages 3-17, exercises for two drums; pages 18-32, exercises for three drums; and pages 33-47, exercises for four drums. Since this book was designed primarily as a source of reading material and not as a graduated method, the student may skip from section to section, working on the most relevant studies for them.
Perhaps the most important aspect of this work is the abundance of musical elements contained in each study. Frequent dynamic changes, glissandi, musical expressions, tuning changes, artificial rhythms, meter changes and chords of from two to four notes characterise the style of composers from the eighteenth to the twentieth century.
