In Gilbert And Sullivan's 'The Pirates of Penzance' our hero is Frederick, a young man apprenticed to a pirate king because of a misunderstanding - his nanny misheard his parent's request to apprentice him to a pilot. On the verge of turning his back on the ill-adjusted, swashbuckling lifestyle and crew, Frederick finds himself torn between his love for Mable, his desire to eliminate the scourge of piracy, and his sense of duty - the subtitle for the show is 'The Slave of Duty'. Of course, the final twist is another identity confusion - just when all seems lost, the pirates are bound over to surrender - because they're all orphaned noblemen. They regain their places in the House of Lords.
