Harri Viitanen's three passions are the organ, nature and the stars, and he combines the first two of these in Images d'oiseaux. The birdsongs which function as an important element in the work were studied from recordings made inthe vicinity of Viitanen's home: they are the nightingale, pied fly-catcher, blackbird and great tit. The work is written for a three or four-manual instrument with the addition of two clicking stones which contribute to thebirdsong effects.
