The choral Le don des larmes by the Belgian organist and composer Benoît Mernier is conceived as a symphonic work for a great organ of the Cavaillé-Coll type. The “Chorale” is more a chaconne than a Lutheran chorale and it appears in various forms in the manner of an improvisation, repeatedly changing. The subtitle Le don des larmes [the gift of tears] derives from the mystical Catholic tradition which considers crying to be a boon. A finely worked-out, striking piece for organ, marked by a delight in rich and varied sounds.
