Maurice Ravel originally composed his Pièce en Forme de Habanera in 1907 for bass voice and piano. Ravel later transcribed the piece for cello and piano, while retaining all the virtuosity of the original composition. Throughout his life, Ravel was fascinated by the music of Spain and many of his compositions reflect this interest. The dark timbre of the English Horn works particularly well for this slow, sultry Spanish dance called a habanera.
